NN North Sea Jazz Art Poster Competition 2023

This year’s winner of the annual North Sea Jazz art poster competition is Sonja Schravesande, a first year Illustration student at WdKA.

The art poster competition is held among students of Rotterdam’s Willem de Kooning Academy to give new talent a platform. From all the submissions, 15 posters got nominated for the award. These 15 posters will be exhibited during the North Sea Jazz Festival. The jury announced the number 2 winner: Luuk Daudeij and 3 winner: Yana Haaitsma during the exhibition and festive award evening on June 29th. Next to the 3 Art Poster winners, three posters were selected for T-shirt designs: Suheda Saricam, Merlin Mollinga and Pepijn Kolsteren. Scroll down to see all selected works for the exhibition, including the poster and T-shirt winners.

“I already had the idea of a fish morphing into a trumpet in mind for a few weeks but it only started looking like the final result a few hours before the deadline. Where some people would consider the use of a fish and a trumpet as a cliché, I think it's actually quite special how such simple images can immediately make you think of North Sea Jazz”, says winner Sonja.

“Winning this competition gave me more confidence in my own process and decision making.”
