Name, subject, branch of knowledge
Lars Deltrap, Illustration core tutor, branch of knowledge: illustration, animation, education.
What inspires you?
I find inspiration everywhere: in everyday life, but also in the work of fellow illustrators and animators, in visual art, music, theatre and dance. I find it inspiring when different disciplines meet and influence each other: often the most surprising discoveries take place at the intersections between different domains.
What defines you as a tutor? Your strongest points?
Students and tutors at an art academy shouldn’t only be practising art, but also questioning art. This critical reflection requires certain freedom and distance; as a tutor, I try to create as many opportunities as possible for this in my classes.
It’s not so interesting when things go exactly as planned; unexpected discoveries are often what you can learn most from at the academy
What is your dream/goal as a tutor?
As a tutor, I always try to encourage students to take artistic risks. That means that things sometimes go wrong, and also that it’s all right when they do. It’s not so interesting when things go exactly as planned; unexpected discoveries are often what you can learn most from at the academy.
Name one item on your bucket list.
I would really like to do the design for theatre production someday.
Whom would you call true innovator?
David Hockney.
