Meet Annick Sickinghe, an alumna of WdKA, who works as a concept designer, performing artist and documentary filmmaker. Her work since graduating from the Advertising & Beyond programme, is focused on creating impactful narratives, particularly in the realm of health and social issues. This interview delves into her experiences at WdKA and the evolution of her career.

How did you end up at WdKA?

“My decision to study at WdKA was somewhat impulsive. At 18, fresh out of high school, I attended several open days at various institutions. I was torn between pursuing music at the conservatory or exploring visual arts at WdKA. However, upon visiting WdKA, I immediately felt a sense of belonging. Despite my initial apprehension about the term "advertising," I was drawn to the conceptual nature of the program and its emphasis on addressing social issues creatively. It was a choice driven by intuition, and it led me to discover my true passion for storytelling through visual mediums.”

How did you experience your time at WdKA?

“My time at WdKA was intense, especially as one of the few students straight out of high school. I found myself navigating through the challenges of understanding what was expected of me. However, a turning point came when I realized the importance of staying true to my own voice and vision, rather than conforming to perceived expectations. As I progressed through the programme, I became more confident in my abilities and began to explore various mediums, particularly photography and film, which resonated deeply with me. WdKA provided a nurturing environment for experimentation and self-discovery, shaping my artistic identity and laying the foundation for my future projects.”

What was your graduation work about?

“My graduation project was a short documentary titled "Later," which explored the process of coping with childhood cancer. Drawing from my personal experience as a cancer survivor, I embarked on a journey to delve into the complexities of healing and resilience. The documentary featured interviews, animation, and artistic elements, aiming to spark conversations and foster understanding around the topic. Its release garnered positive feedback and paved the way for future opportunities in the realm of documentary filmmaking.”

What happened after graduation?

“Following graduation, opportunities in documentary filmmaking began to unfold. I was approached to create a documentary for the Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences, which provided me with valuable experience and exposure. Subsequently, I was entrusted with the task of developing a documentary series for an oncology hospital. The release of my documentaries in small cinemas in Amsterdam and their subsequent integration into medical education programs brought a sense of fulfillment and purpose to my work.”

What are your dreams for the future?

“Looking ahead, I envision continuing my journey in documentary filmmaking while exploring other creative avenues. Music has always been a passion of mine, and I intend to continue performing and creating music alongside my filmmaking endeavors. Additionally, I am involved in various collaborative projects, including music theatre performances and installations, which allow me to diversify my artistic portfolio and engage with different audiences. My goal is to remain open to new opportunities and mediums, embracing creativity in all its forms.”

What was the most valuable thing about your time at the academy?

“The most valuable aspect of my time at WdKA was the creative environment it provided. Surrounded by fellow artists and creatives, I found inspiration in the exchange of ideas and the collective pursuit of artistic expression. The critical discussions and collaborative spirit nurtured at WdKA continue to influence my work to this day, reminding me of the importance of community and collaboration in the creative process.”

What advice would you like to give to current WdKA students aspiring to a similar position?

“To current WdKA students, I would encourage you not to be afraid to embrace freelancing and pursue your own projects. While stability is important, post-graduation is an opportune time to explore your creative freedom and take on projects that resonate with you. Surround yourself with like-minded individuals and build a supportive network of fellow creatives who can provide guidance and encouragement along the way. Trust in your abilities and remain open to new opportunities, for the journey ahead is filled with endless possibilities.”
